The frantic pace of human life. The growing chase for unrestrained consumption, disconnected from actual deprivation, as though consumption could resist natural laws by constantly and relentlessly asking for more. Such is the premise of the exhibition 'The End of Furniture'.

In this futuristic journey, the viewer is propelled to a point in time when the design world has abandoned the sacrosanct doctrine of consumption in order to define a new reality: a design world connected to the community and firmly grounded in the society from which it operates. Acting in accordance with the concept of sustainability, it combines found materials with a new awareness, reviving the lost magic that binds existing elements together.

 

This apocalyptic vision focuses on the period of time when the need to go back to basics started to seep in, when unbounded consumption, flows of refugees, climate change and human loneliness foreshadowed the collapse of Western values. The design world recognized the need to formulate a new manifesto. It understood that it had the duty to lead the change by discarding any method bound to produce more meaningless design.

 

The exhibition “The End of Furniture” seeks to re-establish the relationship between designer, culture and society through innovative objects that refer to ancient times in which designers used to humanize and even to breathe life into all kinds of designed objects. Used as raw material, wood is salvaged from the street and revived. Each work is a piece in a larger puzzle telling the story of a mended and resurrected society which rose from the ruins of a humanity that had broken away from its roots in the name of modernization and progress.

The exhibition unveils the new quintessence of design. Installed in the space are five stories, all of which are open to individual decryption and interpretation. Each individual story is woven into the overarching story.
